Overview
BMW Motorrad is the motorcycle division of the BMW Group, headquartered in Munich, Germany. In 1923, BMW launched its first motorcycle, the R32, featuring the iconic boxer twin-cylinder engine. BMW is renowned for innovative technology (Telelever front suspension, ESA electronic suspension, ACC adaptive cruise control) and the GS adventure bike series.
BMW is the only luxury brand to achieve world-class success in both automobiles and motorcycles. Its motorcycle business follows the same engineering standards as its cars — leading in comfort, safety, and technological innovation.
History
Origins and Boxer Era (1923-1960)
- 1923: First motorcycle R32 with 494cc boxer twin engine and shaft drive
- 1925: R32's shaft drive + boxer layout still used on some current BMW models
- 1937: Ernst Henne sets 279.5 km/h world speed record on a BMW, standing for 14 years
- 1951: R51/3, first BMW with telescopic fork front suspension
- 1955: R50/R60 with Earles front fork
The R32 established BMW's core motorcycle DNA that has persisted for a century — the boxer engine and shaft drive. This distinctive engineering path set BMW apart from Japanese and Italian brands from the very beginning.
Exploration and Transformation (1970-2000)
- 1976: R100RS, first production motorcycle with full fairing, drag coefficient of just 0.38
- 1978: R100RT tourer defines BMW's touring direction
- 1980: R80G/S launched, creating the GS (Gelände/Straße, off-road/road) adventure bike category
- 1983-1985: BMW wins consecutive Dakar Rally motorcycle class victories
- 1987: K75 with inline three-cylinder liquid-cooled engine
- 1993: R1100RS debuts with Telelever front suspension
The R80G/S changed motorcycling forever — proving that an "on-off road" bike could create an entirely new category. GS would later become BMW's most successful and best-selling series.
Modern Peak (2001-Present)
- 2004: K1200S with 167 hp inline-four, BMW's first true superbike
- 2005: R1200 GS, completely reinventing the GS series
- 2009: S1000 RR with 999cc inline-four 193 hp — BMW's bombshell in the superbike world
- 2012: S1000 RR wins WorldSBK manufacturer championship
- 2013: K1600 GTL flagship tourer with 1649cc inline-six engine
- 2019: CE 04 electric scooter launched
- 2020: R18 with BMW's largest-ever engine (1802cc boxer)
- 2023: All-new R1300 GS, a comprehensive GS generation update
- 2024: Toprak Razgatlıoğlu wins WorldSBK rider title on BMW M1000RR
The S1000 RR stunned the motorcycling world in 2009 — BMW, a brand known for tourers and adventure bikes, had built a machine capable of challenging Japanese superbike dominance. It proved BMW's engineering capability exceeded all expectations.
